It’s about time Six Ingredients or Less had a website! It’s time for us to embrace new media in every way possible.

So, how should I begin this journey? “At the beginning, of course!” you say?

That’s part of the dilemma, I suppose. Six Ingredients or Less has been around for 30 years now. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true. Thirty years, over 2,000,000 cookbooks sold, tons of food (both good and bad), a second and third generation and many amazing memories.

I remember the beginning. When mother, Carlean Johnson, published our first cookbook it was the first of its kind.

“Only six ingredients?” a customer would ask as we peddled those books at a county fair.

“Or less!” my mother or I would proudly answer.

These ladies were thrilled to find a cookbook using fewer ingredients, and even more thrilled to find they were usually staple ingredients they already had on hand.
Through blood, sweat and tears Six Ingredient or Less took off. The years moved along and we published 11 books in the Six Ingredients or Less series, selling over 2 million copies.

There were a few times while standing at one of those county fairs or tradeshows, when a customer would comment that our books were self-published. They had a book that was published. My humble mother would congratulate them, and tell them how wonderful she thought it was. She would then sweetly ask them how many books that published author had sold.

It always seemed to get quiet, really fast.

Cooking has changed a lot in three decades. We have access to new and exciting ingredients, gadgets that can perform cuisine acrobatics and a myriad of cooking trends and exciting options sweeping the country.

Yet, cooking is still very much the same as it was three decades ago. People are still busy. They want to be able cook and then sit still for just a few moments. They want to stop the clock and enjoy a family meal together. That time of sharing your day together is invaluable, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to do it with food that tastes so good.

As we journey together, you’ll see that I’m not a writer by trade. That’s probably why it’s taken me so long, dragging my feet, before creating this website. (You’ll figure out I’m not a professional photographer, either.)

However, I believe it’s time. It’s past time. It’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone. Time to share ideas, stories, recipes and a little bit of my own life with Six Ingredients or Less fans – both old and new. Along the way, I’ll give you some of by best tips and tricks to getting in and out of the kitchen fast. Along the way, you’ll learn to prepare delicious and nutritious recipes using only Six Ingredient or Less.
